Blossoms Chullo
Déjà Vu Knits - Inspired by textiles through time...

Blossoms Chullo designed by Shirley Scott

Most South American chullos are so complex that even experienced knitters fear them! Were they actually knit by extra-terrestrials, like the rumour we've heard about the Nazca Lines? The Blossoms Chullo, adapted from an actual example, uses only two colours per round without sacrificing colour variety. The essential look of the original has been preserved while the pattern is written at a gauge ordinary earthlings can easily achieve with available yarns.

Traditional chullos have several interesting aspects. They were knit with very fine gauge, and multiple colours per row.

Using the traditional method of holding the yarns around the neck, the knitter was always purling and working on the wrong side, with the patterning on the right side. What a challenge! (Fear not gentle knitter, the Blossoms Chullo pattern is a simplified version, and is knit in the round on the right side of the work). Often chullos were knit by men for their sons.

Gauge is fine: 32 sts = 4" in colour pattern after blocking.
Suggested needle size: 3 mm / 3 US set of double points, and circular needle
Yarn Requirements: 8 x 50 gr of Shetland yarn or fine fingering for the 8 colour version, OR 3 x 50 gr of Shetland yarn or fine fingering for the 3 colour version.

Special features include:

  • Branch of Blossoms, a traditional chullo patterning
  • Traditional ear flaps in colourful garter stitch
  • Dark and Light Squares, another traditional chullo patterning
  • Tasselled ties and hat top
  • Charted for knitting with 8 colours of yarn, and with 3 colours of yarn

Blossoms Chullo

Knit in 2 colour/ single colour per row patterning in garter stitch, the ear flap is shaped into a V with center decreases. A very clever traditional technique, and makes for a extra warmth. Tassels in co-ordinating yarn finish it off!

Blossoms Chullo

In this close up of the main hat patterning are featured 2 traditional Chullo patterns - Dark and Light Squares shown in blue/white and navy/orange, and the Branch of Blossoms shown in blue/white and navy/red.

In both stitch patterns it is interesting to see the effects of reversing the colours used - the elements of the stitch pattern which become more prominent in the design change.
