"Among other forms of lace-making, lace knitting enjoyed great popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries. Executed with very fine lace thread and very fine needles, it was also very time-consuming work, and eventually passed out of fashion when machine-made lace was introduced.

The lace knitting traditions of the Shetland Isles and Orenburg have been well-documented in recent years, but a third tradition, which has received somewhat less attention, reached its apex during the years between the two world wars. It was especially popular in Austria and Germany, where it was termed Kunstriken (art knitting). As it was discovered by other cultures it became identified as Kunst lace and "Modern" Lace Knitting.

Niebling's charted designs have appeared in numerous publications from Italy, Spain, Switzerland, France and England, as well as Germany and Austria. The work of Mrs. Kazuko Ichida and her daughter Naoko Ichida helped to spread the art of Nielbling's lace knitting to Japan through the two volumes we are here reprinting. We are pleased to present this new edition of these books, which include several of Herbert Nieblings designs, as a part of our ongoing efforts to preserve the heritage of fine lace and bring it to a new generation of knitters."

NOTE: An English translation of the symbols is also enclosed, along with instructions on crocheted provisional cast-ons.
