In the Author's Words....
"...through the sweaters in this book, I hope I have made
the Celtic landscape come alive and that I have provided a
means for its artistic metaphors to leave the museums and be
admired and enjoyed in everyday life" (pg 7, )
Celtic designs in manuscripts,
metalwork and stonework have intrigued and amazed designers
of all kinds with their beauty, flowing designs and high
level of craftsmanship. In creating this book of 25 sweater
designs, (including 6 for children and 2 for men), Alice
Starmore has created both colour and textural patterns based
on Celtic Key, Fretwork, Knotwork, Spirals and Creature
patterns. All of the sweaters are rated for difficulty, many
in multiple size instructions and accompanied by several
photographs taken against the breathtaking backdrop of
western Ireland.
The Arrowhead Key patterns are inspired by an ancient stone which stands in North Eastern Scotland call the 'Nigg' stone. In a colour
interpretation of the design, the sweater ( in 18 colours
reflective of the 'early morning colours of lakes and
distant hills') combines large motifs with check patterned
borders and in a textural version creates a striking
knit/purl design in a close fitting seamless sweater.
The 'Kells' sweater is based on
the maze-like richly coloured art of Celtic manuscipts and
combines a simple repeated diamond pattern using a myriad of
19 colours, each diamond design outlined in navy yarn. The
'Durrow' sweater combines colourful geometric motifs
encircled by a knotwork cable pattern, with textured
knit/purl in the sleeve and side panels - a very striking
sweater.
Unusual design details incorporated in the sweaters range from a double cable neckband in a women's and child's version of knotwork design
sweaters; a non-rib colour border for the neck, sleeve and
bottom edge on a Celtic key sweater; and a long Celtic
knotwork sweater with a ribbed waistline mid-way.
This design collection is both inspiring and challenging for knitters of varying expertise and has many beautiful colour combinations, garment shapes and intriguing historical references.
