By the title alone you know this is going to be a very special book. The book was originally published in Norway, written by Solveig Hisdal, then reprinted in English in 2004, and subsequently went out of print. Don't miss out this time with this New Reprint.
With a background in graphic and fashion design and a passion for the traditional textiles of her country, the author has created colourful and intricate designs that reflect her heritage.
The photographs of her designs and the gorgeous textiles that inspired them are beautifully done. Some of the knitted garments even show the inside, revealing neatly stranded knitting.
The attention to detail and edgings shows the work of an expert designer, some designs with velvet edges and floral fabric facings. Others have picot edges on the hemlines and sleeve edges. There is also an expert blending of different pattering and colourways within the same garment.
With each garment the historical fabric that inspired it is shown, along with the author's notes on what it was about the historical item that intrigued her. Interspersed with the knitted garments are close-up pictures of knitting, scenic landscapes, meadows and forests, plus Norwegian poetry in both English and Norwegian.
Some of the garments include: a child's bonnet in a floral pattern with picot front edging; a child's cardigan in an pattern reflective of striped and ikat weavings; a fitted garter stitch camisole knit from side to side with moss stitch panels; a fitted cardigan with velvet collar and cuffs, plus a ruffled muff; and several women's cardigans in colourful floral designs.
One other notable observation is the excellent knitting and finishing of the garments - a combination no doubt of expert knitters and beautiful yarns. You want to reach into the book and feel these lovely garments.
