In the Author's Words.... Folk Shawls
" The shawl is perhaps the oldest of garments; whether knitted or woven it has been worn for centuries. the shawl appears in some guise and shape in many diverse cultures. Wherever people have been working, living, telling stories and celebrating, there have been people wearing shawls, wrapped in blankets, draped in lace. "

Folk Shawls
Women have made and worn shawls over the centuries for many reasons; for warmth and comfort; to celebrate births and marriages, or mourn their loved ones. Shawls with their drape and flexible fit usually wrap around any body shape. They can be made in a wide variety of shapes and designs; with yarns and patterns light and lacy, or textured heavier knits for warmth; for everyday wear or special occasions.
In Folk shawls, there are patterns inspired by other knitted shawls and some by woven and lace fabrics. There are 25 shawls, each shown in colour and with detailed instructions and charts, plus social and cultural information about their history. The shawls themselves range from elegant to practical, dramatic to bold.
The shawl shown above is the Irish Diamond Shawl and was inspired by a modern woven shawl. The shaping of the shawl is very unusual and has a very dramatic effect. Another interesting shawl in the book is the Aran Pocket Shawl, a rectangular shawl in knit/purl textures with pockets on either ends, both set at an angle - smart looking and practical.
The Spanish Christening Shawl, shown on the left, was inspired by a1950's photo of a baby wrapped in lace and held lovingly by it's grandmother. The center section is a simple diamond lace pattern and the wide garter stitch lace edging makes an elegant scalloped border.
This is a wonderful book for those who love shawls, or as the author Cheryl Oberle says "To those who say 'I don't wear shawls', my answer is 'That's because you haven't met the right shawl!' I hope you'll find it here."
