Though the origins of knitting are not truly known, there have been many discoveries of knitting artifacts from past centuries. From the earliest finds from medieval Egypt ( AD) of finely knit and highly patterned designs to Spanish gloves (1500's) in rich red and gold silks with intricate designs and beautiful shaped gauntlets; exquisite patterned rugs created by master knitters in Germany during the 17th century to large gossamer lace shawls in stunning lace patterns knit by Shetlanders in the 19th century.
The patterns and purposes of all of these works of knitting are diverse, but there are common themes. Knitting was more than a fabric construction that allowed for good fit and warm garments in simple stitches. Decorative patterns, intricate lace and creative stitches have been dreamed of and created by incredible knitters for hundreds of years, all over the world.
Knitting is a craft that calls to many. The allure of both simple tools and beginning stitches that are quickly learned even by young children appeals to many. But the possibilities for shaping, complex stitches and patterning, endless variations of garments and fabrics provide a life-time of learning. It is one of those crafts where no matter what high level you may reach, there is always so much more to learn.
The patterns offered here celebrate beautiful knitting from other traditions and times, as well as knitting designs inspired by other textiles. Listed below are current patterns available from Déjà Vu Knits, and from other knitwear designers who are also inspired by the beauty of 'textiles through time'. Also shown are upcoming patterns as well as links of interest.
Northern Roses Lace Motifs, designer Marsha White
Available as a kit using either Country Silk Demi, or Zephyr laceweight used doubled
Inspired by the Shetland Lace pattern Rose Trellis Lace, this scarf pattern has several options. There are 3 different designs, each at a different level of difficulty, plus each design is charted for 2 yarn weights, Fingering and DK (double knitting). You also have the option of knitting the Fingering versions with two strands of Lace weight yarn (as offered in our kit using luscious Zephyr wool/silk laceweight.)
If you have any left over yarn after knitting the scarf, there is a Bonus pattern (shown on right) for matching lacy wrist warmers!
NOTE PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED under the same name, but with a different photo. This updated version also includes a BONUS: Wrist Warmer Pattern
Compass Rose Comforts, designer Shirley Scott & Marsha White
This traditional two-colour pattern is from the North Atlantic seaboard, often found in
traditional knit mittens. The compass rose map symbol has been used by mariners for centuries
to determine direction and winds. When the cold north winds blow your way, keep warm in this combination of Compass Rose and Sailor's Rib patterning.
Blossoms Chullo, designer by Shirley Scott
The Blossoms Chullo is a simplified version of the traditional chullo.
Most South American chullos are so complex that even experienced knitters fear them! Were they actually knit by extra-terrestrials, like the rumour we've heard about the Nazca Lines?
Scottish Diamond Gloves, designer by Shirley Scott
This unusual glove pattern was inspired by the historical patterns for Sanquhar-style gloves from the UK, a popular design in the 19th century. Their distinctive features are the fine block motif that is repeated throughout the glove, initials section on the inside of the cuff, gussets between the fingers, and 2 colour ribbing.
Pinwheel Gloves, designer by Shirley Scott
This is a very modern interpretation of the historical Sanquhar-style gloves patterns. Though the pattering is contemporary, Shirley has maintained the traditional glove structure with a block motif that is repeated throughout the glove, initials section on the inside of the cuff, gussets between the fingers, and 2 colour ribbing.
Sanquhar Sampler and Wristwarmers
is a compilation of traditional designs used in Sanquhar gloves. While the sampler warms the wall decoratively, matching wristwarmers decoratively warm your hands! The Wristwarmers are sized for small, medium and large.
Knit in dark and light colours the distinctive patterning of several Sanquhar designs combine to create a sampler that both commemorates and celebrates.
